PAN JAZZ 2011 | Tales From The Silk Cotton Tree

From the spiritual depths of soulful lore to the heights of human challenge and triumph come the tales that legends are made of. Tales that have stood the test of time and held in the primal memory of every creature both wooded and blooded that walk mother earth. Come with us now and feel the songs that make legend and lore reverberate through you and sway your very seat. Cebia (The tree pronounced "sayba") says sit back and enjoy the family oriented rhythms and Tales from the Silk Cotton Tree. 2011 Storytellers, Hugh Masekela, Arturo Tappin, Victor Provost, Leon Foster Thomas, Bakita Kumalo and more take through on a Journey through South Africa and the West Indies musically! Tales From The Silk Cotton Tree promptly starts at 7pm – 9:15pm and takes place in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Rose Theater on the 5th Floor.

Start the experience off right by attending the Complimentary World Pre-Concert Reception. The Pre-Concert Reception will feature tastings from various indigenous restaurants in and around New York City featuring Caribbean and South African delights. Reception Kicks off at 4:30pm in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Atrium on the 5th Floor.

Hugh Masekela

Legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela is an innovator in the world music and jazz scene and is active as a performer, composer, producer and activist. This iconic artist is best known for his integral role in Paul Simon’s tour behind the classic album Graceland. Masekela’s Grammy award-winning hit Grazing in the Grass sold over 4 million copies and made him an international star. He has collaborated with numerous artists in the USA, Africa and Europe including Miriam Makeba, Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Belafonte and Herb Albert. Renowned choreographer Alvin Ailey chose a piece by Masekela to create a work for his world famous Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Masekela also co-created the Broadway smash musical Sarafina that introduced the sounds and passion of South African music to theater audiences worldwide.
