Leon Foster Thomas (Pannist) is carving a new path when it comes to the contemporary styles of jazz, especially concerning one of the finest musical instruents invented in the 20th century: the Steel Pan. Winner of the 2002 World Steelband Music Festival Soloist category and the Festival’s Duet category in 2004, “Foster,” as he is also called, is doing his part to expose music lovers to the versatility and many capabilities of this remarkable instrument. Leon has proven to be as versatile as his instrument of choice. Apart from his playing, Leon is also recognized as a composer, arranger, and drummer. In 2005 and 2007, he was the drummer for both winning bands of Trinidad and Tobago’s National Panorama: Phase II Pan Groove and Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille, respectively. In 2010 Leon released his debut solo album, entitled What You Don’t Know…. On this album, he expresses himself through his composi tions, and has transcended genres while still maintaining his unique jazz style.
